The U.S. ISBN Agency will not provide an ISBN by telephone or fax. Processing time for an ISBN application is 15 full business days from the date of receipt (provided there are no problems with the application). ISBNs/bar codes can be mailed or e-mailed to publishers after this processing period is completed, but NOT both.

EXPRESS PROCESSING:

Express Processing is a 24 business hours service by e-mail only (provided there are no problems with the application).

The SAN system, an American National Standards Institute (ANSI) standard, assigns each address a unique identification number that is used to positively identify all buying and selling transactions within the industry. WELCOME TO THE ONLINE ISBN LOG BOOK

Publishers can now have their ISBN log book electronically stored in Bowker's Bowkerlink web site.

This enables publishers to have electronic access to their own list of ISBNs and maintain their logbook directly online by:

Adding a title to the Books In Print update screen and having it autopopulated with the next available ISBN selected from the online log book.
Having this new data automatically listed in the Books In Print database, with a correct and valid ISBN.
Viewing all information submitted to Books In Print on the ISBN log book at all times.
Downloading the entire ISBN log book from the web site, inclusive of ISBNs with or without a title assignment.

And, most importantly, starting January 1, 2007, your online 10-digit ISBNs will be automatically converted to 13-digit ISBNs with the addition of the EAN prefix 978, as required by the revision of the ISBN standard as established by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). You will not have to make any changes yourself!

By having an online ISBN log book publishers also avoid expenses and delays by not having to request and pay for a duplicate copy of a lost or missing log book!
